The author of the double crime in Bran, from the beginning of this year, Daniel Ioan Pepine, was sentenced in the first instance to 23 years and 6 months in prison. The criminal killed his cousin, Nicu Pepene, aged 38, and his wife, Alexandra, aged 32.
Nicu Pepene was a fireman, and his wife worked as a medical assistant. Daniel Ioan Pepine was found guilty of aggravated murder and domestic violence by the Brașov Court. The reason why the man killed his cousin and his wife is a misunderstanding related to the land they owned.
The locals claim that it was a 15-centimeter strip of land in dispute between the two cousins. On the night of January 15 to 16, 2023, the author of the double murder entered the house of the two spouses and began to beat them savagely, until the two lost their lives.
Find with crushed heads
The neighbors found them in the morning of January 16, lifeless, with their heads crushed, in the house where they lived, in the village of Șimon, in the Bran municipality of Brasov. The relatives and neighbors suspected Daniel Ioan Pepine as the author of the assassination, especially since he was nowhere to be found.
The criminal hid in the house, armed with a knife. His father revealed to the investigators who arrived at the scene that his son has mental illnesses and had not taken his treatment. Thus, he was considered extremely dangerous, so that the investigators resorted to a forensic psychologist from INC Bucharest to catch him.
Psalms, help to catch the author
The psychologist used an inspired trick, after learning more about the perpetrator. Knowing that this was an extremely religious character, he began to read the Psalms and had the suspect recite from this book of the Bible as well. At that moment, the perpetrator put down the knife, to join his hands, as is done at the time of prayer.
It was enough for the police officers of the Special Action Service to disarm him and thus avoid another tragedy. Pepine described the scene in which he killed his cousin and his wife quite differently.
Investigators said Pepine described the crime scene as a dream, a nightmare, during which someone was grabbing him by the throat and he was struggling to get away, slashing left and right with a knife. He knew that “in a dream” he hit his victims, but he did not remember what happened to them after this fight.
The truth was, however, presented by forensics. Pepine entered the victims’ house on the night of January 15 to 16, breaking a side door. The murder weapons were a knife and an axe. The knife (blade) was found under the body of one of the victims, and the ax full of blood, in the house of the criminal. The clothes (pajamas) full of blood and the boots worn on the night of the tragedy were also discovered here. During the investigation, the criminal stated that he did not remember whether he used an ax or not.
The dog took his trail
The tracking dog of the Brașov Police was the one who led the criminal team to the criminal’s house. They were preparing to search through the woods in the area, convinced that the aggressor had already fled, but the animal, named Bata, simply stopped in front of the house where Pepine was hiding and did not let go. Then the police understood that the individual was hiding there. They found him armed with a knife, hiding in the attic of the building.
Although the criminal is known to have mental health conditions, the psychologists’ report determined that the application of medical safety measures is not recommended, and “the defendant feigns symptoms of lacunar amnesia”, and has discernment, which is why he was tried and convicted as a criminal, not like a sick man.
In addition to the 23-year prison sentence, Pepine will have to pay the relatives of the victims moral damages in the amount of 1,844,969.87 lei.
