Streamer Rostislav rostislav_999 Protasenya decided to turn to the Dota 2 community and the game developers after he was faced with a series of bans on new profiles and calls for blocking from users for using smurf accounts. The content maker published a large open letter on reddit, but the message lasted less than half an hour and was deleted.
The first days after the update were complete chaos. Many players suffered from endless unfounded reports. A few days later, a patch was released with which the affected players received their integrity points back, I was one of them. At first it seemed that the problem was solved… but later it manifested itself in all its glory.
I will try to avoid unnecessary information as much as possible and focus your attention on the absurdity that is happening.
Let’s get down to business:
Shortly before the update, I increased my account from 8.9 thousand MMR to 10.2 thousand MMR, most of the games could be seen on the stream. This means that I had a positive win rate and was clearly not ruining games or negatively impacting the quality of those matches through my actions. After the update came out, when players had the opportunity to send an unlimited number of complaints, my integrity very quickly dropped from 10 thousand to 7.5 thousand, I also received a mute for 700 hours only because of reports from players who complained about me for the sake of fun. The situation still didn’t look that bad, I continued to play and win while waiting for my voice chat ban to end. So, stay focused! Follow what’s happening:
1. In my last game with mute (hour left out of 700), a random person, my viewer, using a Steam vulnerability (Steam support, according to the information I have), KICKED me out of MY account several times. As a result, I left (was eliminated) two games and lost about a thousand integrity points.
2. When my behavior score (courtesy and integrity were about the same) dropped to 6.9k, I could no longer use voice chat (decency <8k). Therefore, I decided to increase the behavior indicator in normal matchmaking and Turbo mode without streaming. Surprise: even if you play with mute, no text chat, just play normal matchmaking on supports with a 70%+ win rate, after 15 games you will get about 150-200 behavior points. So, I had to play over 100 unranked games without the ability to communicate via voice and text chat, that's still not a bad enough situation, right? But in normal matchmaking ANY PLAYER can snipe me, just like in ranked matchmaking, of course. Even if I don’t stream, they just know the time when I play, they know my Dota ID. They start sniping at me and throwing reports at me for no reason, the same situation as before with rating games. I swear, half of the players (even my friends) just say: “Hey Rostik, I have a gift for you, happy birthday” and jokingly report to me, no one could believe that the system could work like that. And that's not counting the haters who also reported me for no reason. I will repeat: no voice, no chat, just maximum output in public in the hope of increasing decency.
3. Politeness and decency – 5 thousand. I gave up trying to correct the situation and return everything as it was. I decided to just continue playing and streaming even without voice. After all, if I can win even without voice and text chat, without being able to do anything that could get me reported, everything will work out and the behavior will be corrected, right? Look what happened:
I, with the rank “Titan” (10.2 thousand MMR), find matches with “Deities” (5-6 thousand MMR). Searching for a game takes from 20 minutes to an hour. In each match, the average rating did not exceed 8 thousand, despite the fact that I have more than 10 thousand MMR. I played with players who also had voice and text chats disabled, whom I was seeing for the first time, and whose rating was 4-5 thousand points lower than mine. Most of them had a level 30-40 profile. My integrity continued to deteriorate until it reached the 3k mark. It became impossible to play and stream.
I don’t want to try to cheat the system, I don’t want to hide from the players and the system. Dear Valve, give me the opportunity to create a new account and raise the rating on it. If this is not possible, please restore integrity to my account. I’m not asking anything from you other than a chance to play this game.
Dota 2 is a big and favorite part of my life. I first reached 10k MMR when I was in school. I know most of the professional players and keep in touch with many of them. I’m not trying to cheat the system or harm the community. I have a lot of problems just trying to play Dota, and even more when trying to stream it. Let me at least improve my integrity, even if it takes more than a hundred games. Many in the community don’t know, but professional players are immune to reports. It would be right to do something similar for popular streamers.
There will always be those who are dissatisfied. I just want to be able to play the game, even if I’m a popular streamer, with my fans and haters. I think it’s fair to limit the ability of fans and haters to influence my position (including integrity) in the game. It’s not normal that people can simply kick me out of the game using system vulnerabilities, lower my integrity with endless reports, or expose me to a DDoS attack using Steam servers.
PS: I do not deny my guilt and never tried. My goal was to draw attention to the problem and try to solve it.
But honestly, the mentality of reddit users scares me. I understand when the community is angry at the smurfs, but what does this have to do with professional players who have accounts with the same MMR? This doesn’t even qualify as a “smurf”, you have never and will never meet these players and they have done nothing to you or the community as a whole.
This problem affects not only me, as a popular streamer, but also ordinary players with high ranks. Which, of course, instead of writing letters to Valve, they will simply create a second account just to chat in voice chat and continue playing.
If you play unrated matches or only in Turbo, if you play games only in parties and your behavior is 12 thousand – there is no need to assert and write under every topic that everything is fine with the system, you do not understand what you are talking about. We’re not talking about smurfs and toxic players, we’re talking about normal guys who can’t play Dota and are forced to change accounts.
I just want to play Dota like before. I don’t care about banned accounts that had up to $5k worth of inventory. I hope I’ve satisfied the need of some community members who need a scapegoat. I hope you, the reddit community, are smart enough to separate my image as a streamer and content creator from the facts above.
Previously, rostislav_999 lost several accounts. Protaseni’s first account was banned on January 3 after massive complaints from reddit users. Later, forum users began calling for other streamers and professional players to be blocked for smurfing.
