[Dossier] Five products to get the most out of your audio on the go

Enjoying your music wherever you go is relatively easy these days. At least, it is more so than at the time of cassette players and boomboxes carried around the shoulder. Today, the problem is different and it is above all a question of enjoying your nomad in a comfortable way, with perfect ergonomics and a quality of listening which has nothing to envy to that of fixed devices. So we have a small assortment of five products to help you get the most out of your audio on the go.

Bose Frames: minimum footprint, maximum style and sound quality

In summer, each outing is often synonymous with sun and music, and it is therefore advisable to equip oneself accordingly. If the idea has already occurred to you to merge these two elements that embellish the holidays, never mind: the Bose Frames are made for you!

These elegant frames want to take your classic earphones to posterity by replacing them outright! Each branch contains a small speaker (one true speaker, not a bone conduction system) to stream your favorite tunes right in the palm of your ears. And those who expected audio quality to be sacrificed on the altar of this innovative format were quickly amazed: as shown our test, the experience is impressive.

This format is well accompanied by a few compromises, since it is difficult to appreciate his music in a noisy environment with the Bose Frames. On the other hand, they are surprisingly discreet for people around and do not risk disturbing your direct vicinity. At 250 €, however, they suffer from significant flaws: our test has clearly highlighted the shortcomings of Frames as sunglasses properly speaking. But whatever the case, it’s a beautiful piece of technology and certainly one of the most organic ways to enjoy music on the go!

Vox Amplug 2: the traveling guitarist’s best friend

© Vox Amplifiers

The Vox Amplug 2 is an adorable micro guitar amp with a special feature: barely larger than a matchbox, it works with two batteries and plugs directly into the jack of the instrument. It thus provides a unique feeling of freedom, with which even an overpriced transmitter cannot compete.

Sound level, the Amplug offers a fairly distinctive audio signature, although modular according to the selected setting. At just 35 €, the Voxplug dominates its head and shoulders category: to see the size of the craft, one could expect a real torture for the ears, but it is nothing. Side functionalities, you will be entitled to some classic effects (chorus, delay, reverb) which, if they remain fairly average, still have the merit of existing. Overall, we are far beyond what we are entitled to expect in a price range where audio equipment is often a gadget, or even a toy: even if it does not look like much, the Amplug is just asking you to fill it up!

Of course, you have to be aware of its limits before buying it: it is not a speaker capable of emitting sound on its own, and you will have to connect another device to it. On the other hand, to work on your ranges by the pool or to scratch three chords after a picnic, this is an extraordinary compromise in. It is also an excellent alternative to play without disturbing family and neighbors during their nap or their telework!

JBL Clip 3: the ideal walking companion

If there is one segment of audio where the offer has exploded in recent years, it is undoubtedly that of portable Bluetooth speakers. Big, small, light, bright, intelligent, there is something for everyone and even more. Manufacturers therefore compete in ingenuity to offer models more suited to specific scenarios.

JBL, for example, markets the Clip 3. This small 11 x 5.5 x 17 cm enclosure has the particularity of having an integrated carabiner: perfect for hanging on a bag during a ride. With barely 200 grams on the scale and an autonomy of ten hours, it will follow you everywhere without complaining or worsening your scoliosis. IPX7 certified, it will not suffer from an unexpected downpour, a slip in a river or a fall in the dust.

A set of features that make it an ideal travel companion, all for less than € 50. And even in the event that you do not have the use of the carabiner, the Clip 3 is a small auxiliary speaker quite capable of sounding a small evening with friends with a robust, all-purpose speaker, and at the same time audio quality quite respectable vis-à-vis its price. Already a classic, following on from its predecessor!

If you are more likely to move around in the evening than on a hike, however, you will not have the use of the carabiner of the JBL Clip 3. You could then fall back on a Bluetooth speaker in the more conventional format, but at the quality and sound power more suited to festive use, like the Sony XB22 and XB32. At respectively 80 and 120 €, they are significantly more expensive than a Clip 3 but win the duel of sound hands down. They are also much heavier, at 540 and 900 grams respectively. They therefore remain easy to transport, but are more likely to be installed once your destination is reached. After which you can see all the trunk available to these two speakers. The acronym XB, for Xtra Bass, announces the color: the two models embed a functionality allowing to reinforce the low frequencies (soberly called EXTA BASS), served by a passive radiator for a rather explosive effect.

In terms of autonomy, the two models ensure a strict minimum of 10 hours of autonomy at full charge, and even up to 24 hours for the XB32 according to official documentation, without EXTRA BASS and without light effects.

These are the freely programmable light games that give these speakers their resolutely festive DNA. Finally the XB32 has one last fun but very gimmicky feature: the “Party Booster” mode which allows you to play different percussions, like drums or cymbals. We simply regret the absence of a USB-C connector, all the same damaging today. You will have to settle for a micro-USB cable to recharge them. A lesser evil, as these two products represent top quality price-quality ratios: all you have to do is decide between the lightness and sobriety of the XB22, or the autonomy and exuberance of the XB32.

Anker Nebula Capsule II

Being able to listen to your music on the move is already within everyone’s reach, but what about watching videos in large format? Very often, this means taking a certain amount of material with you between the screen, the player, and the speakers. To make the experience less restrictive, Anker has developed the Nebula Capsule II, a mini-projector the size of a can of soda. Its special feature: not only will the Capsule II allow you to watch a film, series or concert for approximately three hours, but it also has a 270 ° speaker. No need, therefore, to move your entire living room with this all-in-one device.

The autonomy is sufficient to enjoy his entire film, as long as you do not hope to fall asleep in front of the full version of the Lord of the Rings. Connectivity level, the Capsule has HDMI, jack, classic USB and USB-C sockets. The integration of Android TV is very significant, and the remote control provided makes it a real small compact home theater.

Inevitably, we should not expect a quality worthy of a last generation 4K OLED screen. The maximum resolution offered stops at 720p, all at a fairly faint brightness of 200 ANSI lumens: that is to say that you can cross it in full sun. Audio is also far from transcendent, very rough, but who cares: the Nebula Capsule is an object that you buy for its practicality, not to benefit from a return worthy of professional equipment. It is clear that in the field of versatility and practicality, not only this small projector-speaker has serious arguments, but it even represents a combination of excessively rare features in the same package. What justify its significant price of 500 €.
