In North Rhine-Westphalia, numerous pharmacies are expanding their opening hours to offer an additional option for flu and corona vaccinations. This initiative, known as the “Long Night of Vaccinations,” allows citizens to get vaccinated against flu and COVID-19 until late in the evening.

Protection from the autumn wave

The “Long Night of Vaccination” aims to increase the vaccination rate and protect the population from respiratory infections that begin in the fall. “The time of respiratory infections begins with autumn. A vaccination can protect against flu and Covid19 infections or at least mitigate the progression,” explained Dr. Felix Tenbieg, spokesman for the Dortmund pharmacists’ association, in a press release.

He also highlights the ideal time to get a flu vaccination in October and November and emphasizes that offering vaccinations in pharmacies should help improve accessibility to vaccinations and increase vaccination rates. The low-threshold vaccination offer in pharmacies is just as safe as in doctor’s offices, and only specially trained pharmacists are allowed to carry out these vaccinations.

The flu vaccination is particularly recommended for people over 60, people with chronic underlying illnesses, pregnant women and certain professional groups and is free of charge for those with statutory health insurance. The COVID-19 vaccination in pharmacies is also intended to reach certain target groups, is accessible to adults and young people aged 12 and over and is free for those with statutory health insurance. Dr. Tenbieg recommends that citizens contact their local pharmacy for vaccination appointments to ensure the best possible protection.
