Berlin. One day after Bayern Munich sealed their qualification for the second round of the German Cup, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig also overcame the first hurdle on Saturday, without any major complications.
Dortmund, the 2021 winners of the tournament, beat fourth-tier Lübeck 4-1. New signings centre-back Waldemar Anton opened the scoring before captain Emre Can scored from the penalty spot and goals from Julian Brandt and 18-year-old Belgian Julien Duranville.
For the latter, this is his first goal with the yellow team’s first team.
Previously, Leipzig, cup winners in two of the last three editions of the tournament (2022, 2023), eliminated Essen (3rd division) by the same scoreline.
Essen took the lead in the second minute of the match, before Leipzig fought back with goals from Benjamin Sesko, Loïs Openda, Antonio Nusa and Xavi Simons.
Kaiserslautern, runners-up in the last German Cup and in the second division, beat third-division Ingolstadt 2-1.
In their Friday victory, Vincent Kompany’s new Bayern Munich side thrashed Ulm (2nd Division) 4-0, led by a double from veteran Thomas Müller. The Englishman Harry Kane and the Frenchman Kingsley Coman completed the Bavarian rout.
