Dornbach Stadium Renovation to Include New Main Stand by 2026

Good things take time in Vienna, but momentum is now gaining momentum on Dornbach’s stadium issue. The Hernalser Sports Club will receive a new main stand by 2026, and the venerable cemetery stand will also receive a fresh look. According to sports councilor Peter Hacker, rugby, football and some ÖFB teams will also find a new home here.

Vienna is still moving: one of the oldest sports facilities is now being completely renovated. The Sport-Club Platz in Dornbach will have a new look by 2026. The main stand and the cemetery stand will be rebuilt according to modern and sustainable standards with a green roof, and the south stand will be renovated. The total capacity after the renovation will be almost 5,600 spectators, and there is a lot of rumor about the costs. They amount to between 6.84 and ten million euros.

“As a city, we have taken the project into our own hands and will implement a beautiful, sustainable stadium that will offer the Vienna sports club an excellent environment for its ambitions. The structural analysis showed that there was also an urgent need for action on the cemetery grandstand, so the project was expanded,” says City Councilor for Sports Peter Hacker.

The focus will be on multifunctionality and multiple uses of the entire area. Due to the interpretation according to the “Uefa Category 2” standard, games of the ÖFB women’s team or even rugby. like football games possible. The main user of the stadium remains the Vienna Sports Club.

For the venue’s 120th birthday, it is (finally) getting a new look. Will it then attract even more fans in the bright light of the nearby U5 station in Hernals?

Construction will begin after the current championship in the Regionalliga East has ended in June 2024 with the relocation and demolition of the main and cemetery stands. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2025 and full commissioning in the second quarter of 2026. For the new construction and revitalization of the sports facility at Alszeile 19, the client Sport Wien is relying on the know-how of Vienna Infrastructure Project GmbH (WIP), which has already implemented numerous sports infrastructure projects.

A PV system with an output of around 100,000 kWh will be built on the roof of the main stand. In combination with the heat pump system, self-sufficiency should be guaranteed. Floodlights will be modernized and converted to LED lighting. Due to the large number of sustainable measures, “climate-active” certification is being sought, as with Sport Wien’s previous construction projects.
