Dorival Junior will become the new coach of the Brazilian football team. His current club Sao Paulo FC informed about it on Sunday.
“It’s a dream come true,” Dorival said in Sao Paulo’s post on social network X. The Brazilian federation has yet to confirm his involvement.
Sixty-one-year-old Dorival won the title in the Brazilian Cup and the Cup of Liberators in 2022 with Flamengo and then left for Sao Paulo.
Brazil is ranked sixth in the South American qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which guarantees direct advancement as the last. Forty-nine-year-old Diniz, who also coaches Fluminense, took over the Canaries in July. His status was supposed to be temporary for one year, the CBF management tried to attract Carlo Ancelotti, but he finally extended his contract with Real Madrid.
Three losses in the series were fatal for Diniz, when he was not enough with the team even to compete with the rival from Argentina. The decision to sack him came a day after Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered the reinstatement of Ednaldo Rodrigues as CBF president. On December 7, a lower court declared Rodrigues’ election invalid due to irregularities.
However, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) did not agree with the verdict, and Brazil was threatened with suspension due to the interference of state authorities in the activities of the football federation. AFP reported:
