Dorian Finney-Smith gets emotional first hug with father after parole board review

Smith and McGann each allegedly had a firearm. The meeting of all three men quickly escalated into a physical conflict. Anderson allegedly reached for McGann’s firearm, causing Smith to attack Anderson with a knife. Anderson McGann fired his gun, but Smith’s partner opened fire…

Anderson died from his injuries. McGann agreed to a plea deal, pleading guilty to first-degree murder and receiving a five-year prison sentence. On the other hand, Smith’s lawyer has insisted that he does not have to agree to the settlement because he did not shoot. This decision paid off in the worst way, as Smith was sentenced to 44 years in prison.

Finney-Smith, now 30, was just under a year old at the time.

Finney-Smith was helped by Mark Cuban, the now-former owner of his former management, the Dallas Mavericks, by getting Elbert Smith’s prison sentence reviewed by the Virginia State Parole Board.

As a result, Dorian Finney-Smith was able to hug his father for the first time.

“It was great. Trying to feel him. Feel his arms and shoulders. I don’t remember touching him. It was very emotional. That hug was probably longer than I remember,” Finney-Smith said.

“Nets” head coach Jacques Vaughn also expressed his joy for his player: “We never know what the players have to live with off the court. It’s the best Christmas present. Dorian’s children were also there. A very emotional moment.”

Dorian Finney-Smith spent seven seasons in Dallas, where he played together with both Kristaps Porzingis and Davas Bertans, but he was traded to the Nets in the middle of the last season.
