Doping case: Federer thinks Sinner should have been suspended – Sport.fr

While in New York to attend the US Open quarter-final between Grigor Dimitrov and Frances Tiafoe, Roger Federer also took the opportunity to give his point of view on the Jannik Sinner affair.

In an interview with ” Today“, the former world number one commented on the controversial situation of the young Italian, who was allowed to continue playing after testing positive in two doping tests last March, before being finally cleared by an independent tribunal.

“We don’t want to see that kind of news in our sport, whether he did something or not, or any player did something. I understand that it’s a delicate situation… I understand the frustration of people who wonder if they were treated the same as everyone else. And I think that’s where it comes down to it. I think we’re all convinced that Jannik didn’t do anything, but the potential inconsistency is that he wasn’t put aside (provisionally suspended) when they weren’t 100% sure what was going on, and I think that’s the question that needs to be answered. But it is what it is, and we have to trust the process and everyone involved in this.”
