A group of residents of the Cusset district, in Villeurbanne, decided to occupy a vacant building, renamed Île Egalité. This Sunday, January 17, they are organizing an open day to discuss their new projects.
Since the end of November 2020, the “Solidarité Cusset” collective has occupied the vacant premises at 6 rue de l’Egalité, in Villeurbanne, near Lyon. The building has since been renamed Equality Island. This Sunday, November 17, the activists are organizing an open day to discover their actions and future projects.
The collective is made up of residents of the Cusset district, in Villeurbanne, who have decided to organize themselves in response to the confinements and their consequences for the most precarious. Since the first confinement, they have been organizing distributions of basic necessities and hygiene products with the support of local associations. With the opening of this place, which also makes it possible to accommodate homeless people, the collective intends to propose other actions.
On the ground floor of the building, a free grocery store is open every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. A little further on, washing machines are available to residents of the neighborhood free of charge, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The collective also plans to organize soon French workshops, administrative hotlines, sports activities, and workshops focused on the media. Meet this Sunday at 6 rue de l’Egalité from 1 p.m. to discover the place and its activities.
