For the first time, Steinberg announced himself to a wider audience in the summer of 2018, when he won silver medals at the European U18 Championship, playing with boys a year older. His role in the team was episodic – in six games, he spent an average of 6.3 minutes on the court and scored 1.7 points.
“What did the coaches in Spain appreciate? In my opinion, Mārci and his sister are characterized by enormous self-sacrifice and willingness to “go to the bone” in every episode”, concludes agent Mārtiņš Bērziņš. “Marci has a good enough shot for his position, he is quite athletic and his style of play in the specific position has a lot of pluses. He works with great energy in every episode, he never needs to be encouraged or motivated. Second, Marci reads game situations quickly. He has a high level of basketball IQ, so it’s easy for coaches with him – they don’t have to explain tasks for a long time. That’s why Pedro Martinez likes him and has also attracted the attention of Lukas Banki.”
So far, Steinberg has made a promising move up every year, but last year’s climb from the Spanish third league to ACB can rather be considered a leap. While the player himself does not want to set specific goals, the agent believes that the next step could be to be on the field in every match and increase the playing time to 10-12 minutes. “A bigger role in the team and more minutes, developing and gaining experience. You have to be ready to prove yourself. Right now I am aware that I expect more from myself than I can do at the moment,” sums up Mārcis.
