Don’t underestimate it, study finds heart damage in COVID-19 survivors

Jakarta

A study in the United States found that people who have been infected with COVID-19 have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular complications within six months to a year after infection. The study was published in the journal Nature Medicine.

These complications include heart rhythm disturbances, heart inflammation, blood clots, stroke, coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart failure and death.

“What we found is not good news. COVID-19 can cause serious cardiovascular complications and death,” said senior study author Ziyad Al-Aly, assistant professor at Washington University in the United States. India TodayThursday (10/2/2022).

Al-Aly explained, the heart cannot regenerate or heal easily after being damaged. The condition of damage to the heart will be a disease that will attack humans for life.

The researchers also noted that COVID-19 has so far contributed to 15 million new cases of heart disease worldwide.

“For those who have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19, heart health becomes an integral part of care after acute COVID-19,” he said.

As for the group at risk for heart disease before being infected with SARS-CoV-2, research shows that COVID-19 can increase the risk. In fact, this condition can be experienced by those who were previously infected in good health and those who only had a mild COVID-19 infection.

“For people who have never had heart problems and are considered low risk, they can also experience heart problems after being infected with COVID-19,” said Al-Aly.
