Don’t Try to Make Everything Go Back to the Way it Was Before: A Theatrical Reflection on the Craft and History of Theater in Valparaíso

“Don’t try to make everything go back to the way it was before” is presented on November 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11 and 12 at Matucana 100, Estación Central, Santiago. The play was created to celebrate the 15 years of the UV Theater School in 2020, it premiered in January 2023 and this is the first time it has been presented outside the Valparaíso region. The season prices are: $4,000 for students and seniors, $7,000 for the general public, and popular Thursdays for $3,000. Tickets can be purchased through the website https://www.m100.cl/programacion/teatro/no-intentes/.

The staging reflects on the craft and history of theater in Valparaíso with the desire to reveal processes; how the works are created, what happens before they are released, what are the conflicts, difficulties, joys, sorrows, that invisible universe for the spectators. The work problematizes the issue of generational gaps in teaching and the transfer of knowledge, which has become particularly complex in recent years after the Social Revolt and the pandemic, opening new challenges for both academics and students, who will be future professionals in the matter.

Creative process

Juan Pablo Troncoso, playwright, shares: “The process started with Nicolás Espinoza and Astrid Quintana, who were in charge of the project. They interviewed professors from the UV Theater School and spoke with Isis Maldonado, actress, director and playwright from Valparaíso. Isis told of her experience studying Theater at the University of Chile, Valparaíso Campus. For the Coup they closed the School and she was left as the only student. That story is the germ of the speculative fiction that we invent, we take the antecedent and extreme it to a rarefied future that has many things from the present.

Nicolas Espinoza, director, points out: “The idea of creating this work was born as a way to commemorate the fifteen years of the Theater School of the University of Valparaíso. At this very special milestone, it became inevitable to expand the commemoration to the world and the history of Buenos Aires theater. It starts first as a need, an institutional desire and then that radiates and transforms into a group desire to delve in, know and unite the stories, to go search in the past for that which is projected in the present and that also illuminates paths towards the future. future”.

Naldy Hernandez, an actress with an important career in the Chilean theater, comments as a performer: “This work means making known the work of so many colleagues from Valparaíso, outstanding characters over the years, all in a very entertaining, tender, respectful way. It has been a rich experience. For me it is always a pleasure to share with people from different generations, I feel very grateful to be in the twilight of my life and have these opportunities.”

Catalina Oyarzo, a performer with a 2020 degree from the UV Theater School, closes: “It will be my first time performing on a stage like Matucana 100. I am starting my career as a performing artist very recently, it is an honor to be on stage.” of this Cultural Center so important for the history of theater in Chile. “It’s good that works made in the city of Valparaíso are presented in Santiago, that there are intersections between these two nerve centers of the performing arts in our country.”
