KONTAN.CO.ID – JAKARTA. Anemia is a condition in which you don’t have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen around the body. Anemia can be temporary or long term (chronic).
In many cases, anemia does not usually cause serious complications. However, anemia that is left untreated can also be life-threatening. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body.
If we don’t have enough red blood cells, our organs don’t get enough oxygen and can’t work properly. This can have serious consequences. Here are some serious complications due to anemia:
1. Tired or lethargic
Anemia can make us feel tired, weak and lethargic, making it more difficult to be productive and effective at work. We also often become sleepy and find it difficult to exercise normally.

2. Weak immune system
Severe anemia can weaken the immune system, making us more susceptible to colds, flu, and other illnesses, as well as infections.
3. Heart or lung complications
Severe cases of anemia are at risk for tachycardia. Tachycardia is a heart condition that causes an abnormal heartbeat or heart failure. This condition can make the heart unable to pump blood effectively and the supply of oxygen throughout the body is obstructed.
4. Complications of pregnancy
Pregnant women who have severe anemia are at risk for complications during pregnancy. They also have a high potential for postpartum depression.

5. Death
Some congenital anemias, such as sickle cell anemia, can cause life-threatening complications. Losing a lot of blood rapidly results in acute and severe anemia and can be fatal.
Some types of anemia can also be prevented by consuming foods containing the following nutrients and minerals: – Iron. We can get this nutrient by eating beef, beans, lentils, iron-fortified cereals, dark green leafy vegetables, and fruit.
– Folate
In addition to supplements, we can find these nutrients in fruits, dark green leafy vegetables, green beans, kidney beans, and peanuts.
– Vitamin B-12
Foods rich in vitamin B 12 can be found in meat, dairy products, and cereals and soy products.
– Vitamin C
Foods rich in vitamin C include fruit and orange juice, bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, melons, and strawberries.
