Don’t Scream: A Unique Horror Game Experience with Unreal Engine 5 Technology

People are constantly looking for new experiences and stimuli in games. And sometimes just a small idea can be enough – if it works, you’ve got attention. I can’t say for sure if this is the case with the new horror movie Don’t Scream, but I can imagine he could pull it off. The novelty is powered by Unreal Engine 5 technology and was inspired by found footage horror films from the nineties. Two independent developers are working on it. But none of this is the reason why you should be interested in her. The hint is basically hidden in the name of the game. You must not shout. If you startle and scream, the game will restart.

The game is deliberately simple so that anyone can try it. Even the one who doesn’t play any games.

Your task is to explore Pineview Forest for 18 minutes. The authors themselves say that this is a short haunting experience, but time only passes when you move. And you can’t do without a microphone. The point of the game is to scare you, we shouldn’t even expect a story in the true sense of the word. But we will learn more about the fictional forest here and its mysteries. The game is deliberately simple so that anyone can try it. Even the one who doesn’t play any games. Of course, it is necessary to properly calibrate the microphone so that the management title responds to your startle. At the same time, the authors promise that each game will be different thanks to dozens of dynamic scares.

It is possible to talk while playing, but of course you have to be quieter, the developers advise. Naturally, you can “trick” the microphone calibration so that the game doesn’t register your startle, but then you’ll spoil the experience only for yourself. Of course, it is somehow expected that you will make a sound when startled. If not, the game probably won’t work for you. Otherwise, the authors advise playing in a darkened room, with headphones, explore the game forest a lot and entice other family members and friends to join in the experience.

Although it is possible to finish Don’t Scream in 18 minutes, the authors expect that you will not be able to do it right away and you will be forced to restart. Thanks to this, it should offer more replayability than it seems at first. But it will probably be very variable. The team chose the VHS aesthetic because the developers both like it, but it also lends itself to confusing the player who isn’t sure if they’ve actually seen something or if it’s just the grain and noise of an imperfect image.

Don’t Scream is due out later this year. The early access version will be available on October 27. In the early access program, the authors want to gradually increase the scariness by adding more surprises and scares. Achievements for revealing all the local mysteries will also be added to the full version.
