This is called a silent heart attack and is diagnosed after the event, when a person takes a recording of the heart’s electrical activity (electrocardiogram, or EKG) or when other tests reveal evidence of a heart attack.
Heart attacks do vary in severity, but experts say they all remain worrisome.
“Minor heart attacks are still a big problem. All heart attacks are serious,” says Joseph Campbell, MD, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic.
A mild heart attack is commonly known as a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction, or NSTEMI.
“If we’re told we’re having a mild heart attack, it means our heart hasn’t done much damage and is still pumping normally,” Campbell said.
