As part of the 2021 Jakarta Diabetes Meeting (JDM) event, PERKENI Jakarta and P&G Health Indonesia recently held a public webinar entitled ‘Diabetes Fit in the Era of Pandemic’. And, in commemoration of World Diabetes Day which falls on November 14, 2021, Procter & Gamble (P&G) Health wants to raise awareness of the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy such as numbness and tingling that must be watched out for and detected as early as possible.
Consultant doctor of endocrinology, metabolic and diabetes, Dr. dr. Tri Juli Edi Tarigan Sp.PD-KEMD, explained that neuropathy is a condition of peripheral nerve disorders with certain complaints. The causes can be various but the most common is due to high sugar levels or diabetic neuropathy.
“The symptoms range from numbness, tingling, numbness, pain, thick feeling, gritty feeling, cold, hot, burning, to the most dangerous is the loss of protective sensitivity so you can’t feel when you’re injured. This can result in injury or injury that can lead to on amputation,” he said, in a press statement.
Dr. Tri Juli continued that early detection will help patients get treatment from the start, before nerve damage gets worse. One way to reduce the symptoms of neuropathy is to do physical exercise or exercise, and take vitamins for nerves if necessary.
“Numbers and tingling can be early symptoms and should not be ignored. If it recurs, you should immediately consult a doctor, because you may not be aware that you have diabetes and are already experiencing complications,” he explained.

Sports Medicine Specialist from the Association of Sports Medicine Specialists (PDSKO), Dr. Ade Jeanne Domina L. Tobing, Sp.KO, explained the importance of good, correct, measurable and regular physical activity and physical exercise (BBTT). Sedentary activities such as sitting for long hours can increase the risk of non-communicable diseases / sedentary diseases such as diabetes mellitus, obesity, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, including symptoms of neuropathy due to disease.
Especially since the pandemic and restrictions on social activities have made people less likely to move and tend to a sedentary lifestyle. So, there must be a balance between food intake and physical activity/exercise.
