“Don’t go to Qatar with your personal phones!”

The French National Committee for Information Technology and Liberties (CNIL) has warned fans planning to travel to Qatar to attend the 2022 World Cup matches to pay particular attention to the use of mobile phones during their stay.

“It’s better to travel with an empty smartphone… or with an old, reset phone,” POLITICO magazine quoted the French agency as saying.

Remember that the CNIL is an independent administrative authority, which has the task of ensuring that information technology is placed at the service of the citizen and that it does not constitute damage to his identity, his rights, his privacy or his freedoms individual and public.

He added: “You should pay special attention to any images, videos or digital works that may put you in trouble regarding the legislation” followed in Qatar.

In addition, those who come to Qatar will need to download two mobile applications: the official World Cup application “Hayya” and an anti-coronavirus application “Ehteraz” (Ehteraz).

But experts warn that these applications could be “a form of spyware because they will provide the Qatari authorities with access to people’s data, as well as the ability to read, delete or modify content and even make direct calls”.
