The city board of the LINKE explains the effects of the cancellation of the federal program for language day-care centers for Halle:
“Education cuts are always a disaster. And Halle has experienced more than enough of that in recent years. Be it the shortage of teachers, the university cuts or now the cancellation of the language day-care centers – skills are being reduced, jobs cut and offers discontinued. The language day-care centers are supposed to be about early childhood education and language training, something that experts say is immensely important and was successfully launched nationwide with the project. Halle has also benefited from this, conveying language as a key to the world through the program in a number of day-care centers and thus helping the children’s language development. Now it is to be dropped, the federal government is pushing it onto the states, but Saxony-Anhalt will not provide follow-up financing quickly enough for the foreseeable future. This is playing with the future of the children, which is lost in the wrangling over competences. And what is all this for? The federal government wants to save money while it can make 100 billion euros available for a Bundeswehr special fund. This is not the turning point that we need for a sustainable country. For this we finally need investments in education and social affairs. A start would be made if the federal program is continued. The state of Saxony-Anhalt must finally do something about it.”
