Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US), the Superpower, began to worry. Uncle Sam’s country sees China as a serious competitor in terms of strength in the defense sector.
Deputy Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. John Hyten said China would gradually become the country with the strongest military capability in the world. Moreover, with the disruption and bureaucratic problems in the US.
“Calling China a threat is the right term because the speed with which China is moving is amazing,” Hyten told reporters at the Defense Writers Group roundtable last week.
One example, said Hyten, is the development of hypersonic missiles that China is said to have successfully launched. The US itself failed to launch a similar missile shortly after reports of China’s hypersonics were published in the media.
“In the last five years, the US has done hypersonic tests, while the Chinese have done hundreds,” he said.
China previously launched a hypersonic medium-range missile, the DF-17, in 2019. The missile can cover a range of about 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) and can carry a nuclear warhead.
In addition, in the momentum of a military conference related to weapons and equipment some time ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping has asked his defense side to develop the country’s military weapons and equipment.
Citing the Global Times, Xi’s call was manifested in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan. Xi said this step was also necessary to welcome the centenary of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in 2027.
