Donovan Mitchell was officially introduced as a Cleveland Cavaliers player on Wednesday. The All-Star rear guard, sold 15 days ago by the Utah Jazz, is delighted to join the project led by Koby Altman and does not hide it. During his introductory lecture he was again asked what he thought of the rumors sending him to the New York Knicks, near where he grew up.
Mitchell was honest: yes, he would have liked to join the Knicks.
“I realized I was going to be traded, the signs were there. I thought it was going to be in New York, I’m not going to lie to you. Who wouldn’t want to play at home, near where their mother lives that I haven’t lived there since I was 13, 14, so it would have been nice to come back, but once I saw where I was traded, in which project, it was even more satisfying.
I am really happy to be part of this group and this city. You could see I was wearing a Cavs jersey when I was 5 (laughs). I was a fan of LeBron, but also of Cleveland. It’s amazing what life can do. “
What happens next will tell us whether the Knicks will regret not pulling the trigger to sign Donovan Mitchell when the opportunity arose.
Recall that the Cavs sent Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton, Ochai Agbaji, three first rounds of the Draft and two possible pick trades. A price considered too high by New York, which has clung, in particular, to RJ Barrett.
