For several weeks, attendance at blood collection sites has been declining, worries the EFS. “If the blood reserves remain stable overall, the pockets of a blood group decrease sharply: group O, in particular negative rhesus”, specifies the French Blood Establishment, which invites donors to make an appointment quickly in a donation center in Colmar, Mulhouse or Strasbourg (register on the website: https://dondesang.efs.sante.fr).
O-group donors, known as “universal donors”, are highly sought after today. “They have red blood cells that can be transfused to all patients (with some exceptions), regardless of their blood type. This group, the only one able to substitute for the others, is thus more widely used by healthcare establishments in the event of an immediate life-threatening emergency, when the blood type of the patient who is going to be transfused is not known”, explains the EFS, emphasizing that “group O patients can only be transfused with packed cells of their own blood group. The reserves of O- group blood bags are therefore mechanically weaker. »
And to insist: “In the Grand Est in May, with public holidays, more than 6,000 blood bags will not be collected by the EFS teams. However, during this period, patients continue to need blood products to be treated…”
