Donor Anniversary – Vorarlberger Nachrichten | VN.at

Georg Fritz (55) from Nenzing has been a loyal platelet donor for eight years.

Nenzing On September 27, 2012, Georg Fritz from Nenzing made his first blood platelet donation. Since then, going to the blood donation service, which is located at the Feldkirch State Hospital, has been a natural part of the life of the community worker every three weeks. “I was an active blood donor before, until I was told at some point that I would be very suitable as a platelet donor. I didn’t hesitate for long and have stuck with it to this day, ”says Georg Fritz.

The trained car mechanic was recently honored by the Vorarlberg blood donation service of the Red Cross for his 111th platelet donation and was able to look forward to a certificate and a bulging gift basket. The head of the blood donation service, Michael Hamel, and the director of the Vorarlberger Krankenhausbetriebsgesellschaft, Peter Fraunberger, were delighted and grateful for the 55-year-old’s tireless willingness to donate. Since the blood platelet donations can only be kept for seven days, it is all the more important that there are such loyal donors as Georg Fritz. The next blood platelet donation from the Nenzinger was not long in coming. On Thursday, the valuable elixir of life was taken from him again.

“I always feel good”

The entire process takes about an hour and a half. When donating platelets, the blood is pumped through an apheresis machine, where the valuable platelets are extracted. The rest of the blood is then fed back into the donor’s bloodstream. A procedure that Georg Fritz is now more than familiar. The blood platelet donation runs without any problems every time, emphasizes the loyal donor: “I’ve never felt anything. On the contrary, I always feel good afterwards. “

By bike to donate blood

In order to keep fit, Georg Fritz does not drive to his blood donation appointments in the state hospital, but rather by bike. “On Thursday I cycled from Nenzing to Feldkirch as well. I enjoy it and do me good ”, says the sports enthusiast Nenzinger, who prefers to spend his free time in the mountains or with his family. For the father of six and grandfather of two, it goes without saying that part of his free time is sacrificed to help other people with his platelet donation. “Help is mandatory for me. If my children or I were sick, I would also be happy for a donation, you never know. That motivates me to keep going, ”emphasizes the 55-year-old.

“Will help for a long time”

His urge to help other people is no accident. “My family has always had a social streak, we were brought up that way and grew up with it. My grandfather from South Tyrol was also an active blood donor in Bolzano for 60 years, ”says Fritz. He himself would like to stay with the blood donation service for many years to come – if possible into old age. “As long as I am healthy and can help, I will. Whatever it’s about. Nothing can stop me so quickly. ” VN-TAS
