In an interview with Sky Sport the goalkeeper of the Italian national team Gianluigi Donnarumma has explained because he did not rejoice after saving the decisive penalty in the final of the Europeans Italy-England, won by Italy: “I didn’t realize we had won,” he said with a smile.
Donnarumma’s save from Bukayo Saka’s penalty, which ended the game, came immediately after Jorginho’s fifth, decisive penalty, which if he had scored would have ended the game. Italy had in fact scored three out of four penalties, England two out of four. But Jorginho made a mistake, somewhat surprisingly, and the responsibility shifted to Donnarumma. Evidently he had lost count of the total score of the penalties, and after the save he walked away from the goal, moving calmly towards the area where the goalkeepers wait their turn to save. “I was looking at the referee, I was trying to understand if everything was ok because now with the VAR they always look at your feet because you can’t be in front [alla riga].
