Done: Swedberg leaves Bajen – signs long contract with Celta Vigo

Last autumn, Williot Swedberg made his debut for Hammarby in the Allsvenskan. Since then, the 18-year-old’s career has gained momentum and during the spring he has secured a starting place in Bajen. But when the Allsvenskan is started up after the break, he will not be there.

Swedberg has signed a five-year contract with La Liga club Celta Vigo, and will be the club’s first signing of the summer. The parties will announce this on Thursday. According to the local newspaper Faro de Vigo, Celta has paid around SEK 50 million in transfer fees to Bajen. This means that the big talent will be Hammarby’s biggest sale ever, which Hammarby confirms in a statement on Friday.

In the end, the club choice must have been between Celta and Belgian Club Brugge. Swedberg has spent part of his upbringing in Spain and thus already speaks Spanish.

– In recent years, we have worked out a club strategy that we are now reaping the benefits of. In Williot’s case, all parts of this are involved – from the academy, HTFF, the A-team to a good joint plan with the player, parents and advisers. It is not often that players are sold directly from the Allsvenskan to La Liga, so I think that everyone involved during Williot’s journey should feel proud, says Hammarby’s sports director Jesper Jansson to the club’s website.

Swedberg himself thanks for the support he received from the club and its supporters,

I want to thank everyone in Hammarby – coaches, players, staff and everyone I have played with since I was little and who has helped me on this journey. I also want to give an extra big thank you to the fans, the biggest thing about playing in Bajen is getting your support. A more powerful feeling is difficult to get than when you feel like carrying one on the field, Swedberg says to Hammarby’s website.

During the all-Swedish spring season, Swedberg has scored five goals in ten matches. In Celta Vigo, which finished in eleventh place in La Liga last year, he will now have to compete with team captain Iago Aspas, Nolito, Brais Mendez, Denis Suarez and Franco Cervi.

Swedberg will join Celta coach Eduardo Coudet’s team when the pre – season kicks off, at the Cidade Deportiva Afouteza training facility.
