Benfica has sold Rúben Dias to Manchester City. This transfer involves a mega amount of a total of 71 million euros. However, the papers still need to be signed. Nicolas Otamendi goes the other way and becomes Benfica’s player.
Man City pays a fixed amount of 68 million euros for the defender, excluding 3.6 million in bonuses, Benfica announced in a press release. Dias is immediately one of the most expensive defenders of all time. Harry Maguire leads with 85 million euros, followed by Virgil van Dijk (80 million) and Lucas Hernandez (75 million). Dias’ transfer was more or less announced by himself. Last weekend he said goodbye to Benfica.
“Of course I am very happy”, he said after the 2-0 win against Moreirense. “It was an important moment for me, because this is a special day. I think people also know why.”
Opposite Dias’ departure to Manchester City is the arrival of Otamendi. Benfica pays an amount of fifteen million euros for the Argentinian defender. The transfer is subject to a medical examination. The special double deal has already been announced in Portuguese media.
