Blood donation – District Association Meiningen eV

Many blood donations are needed every day.
Donating blood is very important.
It saves lives.
You can donate blood to the German Red Cross.
There are special facilities for this.
These facilities of the German Red Cross are called:
Blood donation services.

You too must take responsibility.
Donate blood!
This way you help people in need.
For example after an accident.
We say thank you for every blood donation!

Germany’s footballers are supporting blood donations to the German Red Cross. Do it like the pros – become a blood donor and a donor of courage!

Blood donors are already familiar with the procedure. However, anyone who is donating for the first time or is not yet completely sure will probably have many questions or concerns. What exactly happens when I donate blood? How long does it take? What do I need to bear in mind?

To make your decision a little easier, we present the most important stages of a blood donation and hope to welcome you soon at one of our blood donation appointments

Blood donation process

When you register, your personal details will be checked first. We will record this data for first-time donors because we have to document every donation precisely. For this, you will not only need your blood donor and accident assistance card, but also a valid photo ID (e.g. ID card).

Blood donation

Then the body temperature (in the ear) and the blood pigment content (hemoglobin level) are determined. A tiny drop from the fingertip or earlobe is sufficient for this. Blood pressure and pulse are measured and all values are documented. This data, together with the completed medical history questionnaire, gives the doctor valuable information for his decision on whether to allow blood donation.

Blood donation

Before each blood donation, you fill out a detailed questionnaire about your medical history.

Donor approval

A licensed doctor will discuss the completed questionnaire and the health data collected with you and then decide whether you can be approved to donate blood or whether you must be temporarily or even permanently excluded from donating blood. The reasons will of course be explained to you.

Blood donation

Now comes the actual blood donation. You lie down on the collection bed. After a small prick by one of our experienced nurses, around 500 ml of blood will be taken from you. We will also fill three or four laboratory tubes for the examination of your blood donation in our laboratory. This takes around 10 minutes. The puncture is closed with a plaster or a small bandage.

Blood donation

After the blood sample has been taken, you should rest for about 10 minutes so that your circulation can get used to the changed conditions after the blood sample has been taken. Afterwards, you will meet the other donors for a snack. If you do not feel well, medically trained staff are available immediately. You have now sacrificed about an hour of your time, but helped to save lives.
