This Thursday, Miriam Martínez, mother of little Mauri, who suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, participated in La Mañana Xtra on Radio Insular.
His family asks for help in finding a bone marrow donor for a transplant needed to save his life.
The 9-year-old was diagnosed in December 2021 and the treatment he was receiving was working. In fact, he was discharged after six months at the Maternal Infant Hospital of Gran Canaria.
A few weeks ago Mauri unfortunately had a relapse and had to return.
Mauri’s mother hopes that everything will go well, but remembers that “now they depend as the first option on the appearance of a 100 percent compatible donor”, and remembers that the percentage that happens is 1 in 4,000.
Thanks to medical advances, donating marrow is now very simple.
This was explained during the interview by Dr. José Carlos Lodos, a hematologist at the maternal and child hospital.
You need to fill out a form and undergo a blood test. After these steps, join the bone marrow donor registry.
Therefore, donating marrow is similar to donating blood. As simple as putting a line and running the blood through a machine where the stem cells will be extracted.
These donations are anonymous and the donor returns, after a few hours, to generate this tissue again.
