At the end of September, Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe concluded an agreement with the American consortium Westinghouse-Bechtel to design the first Polish nuclear power plant. The first block of the facility to be built in Pomerania would be launched in 2033.
Mateusz Morawiecki’s government wanted American companies to enter the companies building the power plant with their capital and take up up to 49 percent. shares in the project. However, such a provision was not ultimately included in the contract.
Now the team preparing to take power after the elections in Poland is sending signals that Americans should put their capital into the project. “We are aware of the risk associated with such a project, so it would be good for our partner to take a capital share,” Grzegorz Onichowski, energy advisor to the Civic Platform, told Bloomberg.
According to Onichowski, American concerns Westinghouse and Bechtel should buy up to 30 percent. shares in the venture.
“It would be best to build two power plants. One with the Americans and the other, perhaps with another partner,” said a Platform advisor in an interview with Bloomberg.
Donald Tusk on nuclear power plants: this is the most brutal policy
Donald Tusk referred to the issue of building nuclear power plants in Poland at the beginning of November at a meeting with the residents of Jagodno in Wrocław. — If we are to truly participate in a safe and fair transformation, if we are to spend European tens, even hundreds of billions of euros on modernizing our economy, our industry, our energy sector and changing the entire energy model, then of course we must start building a nuclear power plant as soon as possible, said the PO leader. and candidate of the KO, Third Way and Left coalition for prime minister.
— Americans are very involved in these projects. (…) This is the hardest, most brutal policy, these are serious matters, he added.
— We must build this community of economic interests with the United States and link American and Polish interests in a friendly and very solid way, because we do not know what the geopolitical situation will look like in a year or two, we do not know who will win the elections in the United States, Tusk noted.
