Donald Tusk was elected on Monday by the parliament as the new prime minister of Poland, reports Politico.
The vote ended with 248 votes “for” against 201 votes “against”.
This solidified his return almost two months after a coalition of opposition parties, led by the former President of the European Council, achieved a surprise victory in the elections on 15 October.
After nine years out of power, Tusk returns.

Of the 456 deputies who voted, 266 voted that they had no confidence in the prime minister. He received the support of 190 deputies.

Tusk, former President of the European Council, promised to mend Warsaw’s relations with Brussels and to unblock billions in funds meant for Poland that had been held up due to concerns about the rule of law.
“We say goodbye to PiS… history is being made,” wrote Monika Rosa, an MP from Tusk’s group Civic Coalition (KO) on social media platform X.

The President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen greeted Tusk on Monday evening. “Your experience and strong commitment to our European values will be valuable in building a stronger Europe for the benefit of the Polish people,” she told X. “I look forward to working with you, starting with the important EUCO this week.”
