After Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race, Trump’s cognitive abilities are now being viewed particularly critically, believes a professor.

Boston – A survey by CBS News At the beginning of 2024 in the USA it became clear: people were worried that the presidential candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump were fit enough for another term. Biden has since dropped out of the race and was replaced by Kamala Harris, who is more than 20 years younger than him. Her – not yet official – nomination could change the skeptics’ voting decision.

Expert: Donald Trump’s cognitive abilities in the US election campaign now under special observation

Suddenly Trump is too old a candidate for the 2024 US election. One scientist is convinced that the Republican’s age is now becoming a factor in the election campaign. There are already signs that Trump’s obvious misdeeds could receive more attention from now on, as the focus is no longer on the 81-year-old Biden, wrote Heather Cox Richardson, professor of history at Boston College, in her newsletter Letters from an American.

Trump, who is 78 years old, has not faced the same public concerns or criticism as Joe Biden that he is too old or mentally unfit to run for US president again. The Republican has also made numerous blunders in speeches, such as when he confused the city and the state in which he was campaigning. Or when he revealed geographical weaknesses in relation to Hungary. This happened shortly after he made Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán president of Turkey.

Professor convinced: Trump’s failures will now receive more attention

Most recently, Trump apparently no longer remembered that in an interview with Bloomberg said he was considering JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon as his next Treasury Secretary. Richardson suspects that the Republican’s cognitive abilities will be under special scrutiny in the future, just as Biden was when he was the Democratic presidential candidate. “More attention could be paid to Trump’s failings,” the professor wrote.

During the election campaign, Trump repeatedly questioned Biden’s health and age. And he continues to attack him, even though Biden is no longer his opponent. Trump’s narrative now is that Biden is unsuitable to lead the USA until the end of his term as president. It will be interesting to see whether Harris will now turn the tables. (mt)
