Donald Trump wins Michigan primary, Biden holds strong in Democratic race

Feb 28, 2024 at 5:18 AM Update: 20 minutes ago

Donald Trump has once again achieved a major victory in the Republican primaries in the American state of Michigan. The former American president convincingly defeated his last remaining competitor Nikki Haley. In the Democratic primary, President Joe Biden passed his first test.

Trump already had a huge lead over Haley in the polls. The former president could count on 67 percent of the votes, compared to 27 percent for Haley. Just before midnight (about 6 a.m. Dutch time), 60 percent of the Republican votes had been counted.

Both candidates had done little campaigning in Michigan. Therefore, the state was seen as a good indicator of what the average voter thinks of the candidates.

Haley has lost significantly to Trump in all four Republican primaries so far. On Sunday she lost the primary election in South Carolina, the state where she was governor for many years.

Next Tuesday is ‘Super Tuesday’. Then primaries and rallies will be held in sixteen states. In the meantime, three more primaries will follow in states where Trump is on course for clear victories. This concerns the states of Idaho, Missouri and North Dakota.

Biden retains confidence

The Democratic primaries revolved around the question of how much confidence there is in incumbent President Biden. He ultimately received 80 percent of the votes.

Biden is under fire for his strong support for Israel in the Gaza war. Michigan is the US state with the most residents with roots in the Middle East or North Africa.

Prominent Democrats urged Michigan residents to vote “unfettered” in the run-up to the primary. That is to say: for the Democratic Party, but not for a candidate from that party and certainly not for Biden. There was room for that on the ballot. Ultimately, 14 percent of voters followed that advice.

Biden sees Michigan as one of the states that will determine the national election outcome in November. In the national election four years ago, Biden won in Michigan with only 3 percent more votes than Trump.
