Former US President Donald Trump reported Monday that his home in Palm Beach, Florida, was raided by FBI agents.
“These are dark times for our nation,” Trump wrote in a statement.
“After working and cooperating with the relevant government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate,” the former president said.
FBI and Justice Department spokesmen did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Associated Press late Monday, the agency reported.
The former president said the operation was carried out without prior notice. In the statement, Trump stressed that this action is unprecedented, that he had never had something like this happen to a US president.
The Justice Department has investigated the discovery of boxes of records containing classified information that were brought to Mar-a-Lago after the Trump presidency ended.
Trump took it out directly on his former political rival, former Secretary of State and former First Lady Hillary Clinton, saying he was allowed to delete and acid wash 33,000 emails after they were requested for review by Congress.
It was not immediately clear if the FBI search was related to that investigation.
A separate investigation, related to efforts by Trump allies to undo the results of the 2020 presidential election and the January 6, 2021 riots at the US Capitol, has also picked up steam in Washington.
