The former President gave a strong reaction United States of America (AS) Donald Trump against the latest indictment of attempting to overturn the results election in 2020 Then. Trump called the charges “sham charges” intended to “interfere with next year’s presidential election.”
As reported AFPWednesday (2/8/2023), US special attorney Jack Smith filed a 45-page indictment on Tuesday (1/8) local time, the contents of which ensnare a total of four charges against Trump related to efforts to cancel the 2020 election results won by the President Joe Biden.
The four charges consist of three counts of conspiring to defraud the United States and one count of obstructing an official process, related to a joint meeting of Congress on January 6, 2021 that was held to certify Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
The charges against Trump were brought by special counsel Jack Smith, who previously filed charges against Trump for alleged mishandling of classified government documents. Trump also faces trial in New York on charges of paying hush money to porn stars ahead of the election.
Trump, in his comments, called Smith “insane” and accused him of setting up “other trumped-up charges” to “interfere with the presidential election”. Trump is known to be campaigning for president in the 2024 election.
“Why didn’t they do this 2.5 years ago? Why did they wait so long?” Trump asked in a statement via social media Truth Social.
“Because they want to put it in the middle of my campaign,” he said.
Trump has repeatedly attacked the investigations against him as a political “witch hunt” by the US Department of Justice.
