Donald Trump needs to clarify statement about ex-President Andrew Jackson

At the time of his death in 1845, former US President Andrew Jackson owned about 150 slaves who lived and worked on his plantation. Jackson was also considered a notorious “Indian hater”. He launched the displacement of the indigenous people from the southeastern forest to the reserves in the interior. Tens of thousands of indigenous people lost their lives on the so-called “Trail of Tears”.

Ironically, this predecessor – Jackson was the seventh President of the United States, Donald Trump praised. In an interview with the American radio station Sirius XM, he said Jackson “had a big heart” and visited his wife’s grave every day.

Trump continued that Jackson was “really very angry” when he “saw what was happening with the civil war” in mind. However, this is quite unlikely. The civil war started in 1861 and Jackson died in 1845.

After the interview, Trump noticed his mistake and said via Twitter that Jackson had seen the war coming and was angry: “He would never have let that happen.”

One of the causes of the civil war was the dispute over slavery. Two huge armies fought against each other for four years. More than 600,000 people died. One of the major consequences of the war was the final abolition of slavery in the United States.

Trump’s statements on Twitter are causing discussion. Within a few hours, thousands responded to Trump’s tweet – and showed no understanding.
