Former head of the FBI, Charles McGonigal, was charged and arrested at the weekend violation of sanctions against Russia by having offered services to the sanctioned Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.
An arrest former President Donald Trump seems very pleased with.
McGonigal headed the FBI’s counterintelligence division in New York and was one of those who released the information that led to the investigation of Trump following the 2016 presidential election.
The investigation looked into Trump and the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia after it emerged that Russia tried to influence the 2016 presidential election.
The conclusion was that Trump’s election campaign was helped by the Russian influence operation, but that there was no evidence that Trump himself should have been involved.
Now, however, McGonigal, together with court interpreter Sergey Shestakov, has been charged and arrested himself.
McGonigal pleaded not guilty.
On the medium Truth Social, former President Donald Trump goes hard against the top FBI. Newsweek have previously discussed the matter.
“The FBI guy who was after me for Russia fraud, long before I was elected president, has been arrested for accepting Russian money. May he rot in hell,” Trump writes on Truth Social.
Rage against investigation
Trump also went this autumn harshly against the US Department of Justice when he was again under investigation for two different matters.
The first dealt with the 2022 presidential election and whether Trump or his circle attempted to disrupt a peaceful transition of power illegally.
The second on the former president and his circle handled a number of documents, including classified, legal or not.
– This is not acceptable. This is so unfair. This is so political, Trump said at the time to the news channel Fox News.
