Donald Trump Indicted for Second Time: What This Means for His Presidential Campaign

Donald Trump, who has just celebrated his 77th birthday, was charged on Tuesday June 13 for a second time. After New York in April, he is accused in Miami, Florida, of having kept and hidden confidential documents and of having endangered the United States. Documents on the nuclear program or military activities were kept, without security, almost everywhere in his home, even next to the toilets. But an indicted former US president, who is also a new candidate for the White House, constitutes a political earthquake.

Donald Trump has this time been indicted by the Department of Justice, therefore by the American government. In a federal court, there are no cameras, photos were prohibited. Compared to his New York indictment, there is less body language to analyze but the few American reporters in the courtroom described a silent, scowling Donald Trump with his arms crossed. As expected, his lawyer pleaded for him: not guilty

Trump supporters still present

Outside, a very large security device with helicopter overflight and ground law enforcement en masse. We feared outbursts and attacks from far-right groups. A handful of anti-Trump thus treated the former president as a loser, a loser, but without violence. Harry, dressed in his red “I support Trump” t-shirt, does not hide his convictions. But this 23-year-old student is upset by the behavior of his champion. “We have to see what the court will say. I don’t think he is guilty but if he did something wrong, he will get the punishment he deserves. He was probably reckless. be the presidential election. I don’t know,” the young man said.

Donald Trump went free, but did not keep a low profile, far from it. Actually, several hundred supporters were waiting for him at the exit of the car park, like a rock star after a concert. However, his convoy did not stop there but 15 minutes away by car at a Cuban restaurant, called… “le Versailles”. The visit had been prepared and secured by the Secret Service. Inside, many anti-communist Cuban immigrants, sympathetic to the former president, sang “happy birthday” to him a day early. Donald Trump immediately became political, criticizing a corrupt country. He immediately went on the attack when justice left him free and did not confiscate his passport, which she could have done.

Trump attacks the ‘deep state’

But despite this new indictment, the former president can continue his electoral campaign and a conviction in this case will not prevent him from being a candidate. Donald Trump makes this indictment, like the first, an electoral argument. His supporters celebrate him and he takes the opportunity to attack his opponents, Joe Biden and more broadly what he calls “the deep state”, that is to say Washington and the traditional political class. “When I get re-elected, I will annihilate this deep state. I know who they are, they want to take my freedom because they know I won’t let them take your freedom,” Donald Trump said. A trial is expected to take place in early 2024.

Opponents of the ex-president hope that the accumulation will work against him, with two indictments and two others possible: in Georgia for having asked to change the electoral results, and for the assault on the Capitol. Some Republicans might begin to find the court bill a bit burdensome.
