Former US President Donald Trump was interrogated under oath Wednesday in a lawsuit filed against him by a newspaper writer who claimed he raped her.
And Jean Carroll says the attack took place in the room of a luxury clothing store in New York in the mid-1990s.
Trump denied the allegations and said Carroll was lying, which prompted her to file a libel suit.
Carroll’s attorney did not disclose the details of the interrogation, but said it happened on Wednesday.
The civil trial is scheduled for February 6.
A spokesperson for Kaplan Hecker and the Fink law firm said, “On behalf of our client, E Jane Carroll, we are delighted to announce that today we were able to interrogate and collect statements from Donald Trump.”
“But we can’t comment more,” he added.
“As we’ve always said, my client was happy to make things right today,” said Trump’s attorney Alina Heba.
“This case is nothing more than a political ploy, as are many other cases in the long list of witch hunts against Donald Trump,” he added.
In a 2019 article for New York Magazine, Elle’s longtime columnist Carroll said she had the opportunity to meet Trump in late 1995 or early 1996 in Bergdorf Goodman.
She added that she was helping him choose a gift and they ended up in the locker room, where she would be raped. She added that she was 52 at the time and Trump was about 50, and was later married to Marla Maples.
At the time, Carol also said she had told the incident to two friends. One of them advised her to go to the police, but the other warned her not to talk about her, saying, “She Forget it! She has 200 lawyers. She will bury you.”
Trump quickly dismissed the claim, accusing Carroll of lying to sell his book.
When he was president of the United States, he filed a libel suit against him, saying his comments damaged his reputation.
Trump’s lawyers tried to delay the interrogation, but Manhattan Federal District Court Judge Louis A. Kaplan denied the request last week.
Trump responded to that legal failure by turning to social media to say that Ms. Bergdorf Goodman’s “case” is a complete hoax.
More than a dozen women have previously filed sexual misconduct allegations against Trump, which he denied.
Last month, Carroll’s lawyers said he intends to sue Trump for a second time under a new law that gives victims of adult sexual assaults a one-time opportunity to sue even if the statute of limitations is. expired.
His lawyer said he intends to file the new lawsuit on November 24.
The lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal challenges that Trump faces.
Among other cases, the former president faces fraud charges from the New York Attorney General, who filed a lawsuit against him in September, and is also being investigated by the Justice Department for taking and transferring alleged government documents. reserved by the White House and filed in its residence (Mar-a-Lago Resort) in Florida.
Trump has denied wrongdoing in all cases.
