US President Donald Trump said he believes that the US will gain control of Greenland after showing a refreshed interest in acquiring autonomous Danish territory in recent weeks.
“I think we will have it,” reporters told reporters on Air Force One on Saturday, adding that the 57,000 residents of the island “want to be with us”.
His comments come after reports that Danish Prime Minister Methe Fredericksen insisted that Greenland was not for sale in a strong telephone conversation with the US president last week.
Trump supported the prospect of buying the huge Arctic region during his first term in 2019 and said that Greenland’s control by the US is a “absolute necessity” for international security.
“I think people want to be with us,” Trump said when asked about the island in the press room in the presidential plane.
“I don’t really know what Denmark has against it, but it would be a very hostile act if they did not allow this to happen because it is to protect the free world,” he added.
“I think we will take Greenland because it has to do with the freedom of the world,” Trump continued.
“It has nothing to do with the United States except that we are the ones who can provide freedom. They can’t. “
Despite Trump’s apparent confidence on the issue, the Prime Ministers of Greenland and Denmark have previously stated that the island was not for sale.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Mount Mounte said that the use of the land of the territory is “Greenland’s job”, though he expressed the willingness to work more closely with the US for defense and mining.
Meanwhile, the Danish prime minister said earlier this month that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders” and only the local population could determine its future. Fredericksen reiterated its place in a strong 45 -minute telephone communication with Trump last week, according to a Financial Times report.
The newspaper cited an anonymous European official who said the conversation was “horrible”, while another said Trump’s interest in the acquisition of Greenland was “serious and potentially very dangerous”.
The Danish prime minister allegedly insisted that the island was not for sale, but noted the “great interest” of the US for it.
Greenland is on the shortest route from North America to Europe, which makes it of strategic importance to the US. It is also the home of a large American space facility.
In recent years, Greenland’s natural resources have increased, including the extraction of rare land, uranium and iron minerals.
Although the island has widespread autonomy, it remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
But there is a general consensus in Greenland that it will eventually become independent, which could pave the way for a new kind of relationship with the US.
