The Republican is accused, among other things, of overstating the assets of his family holding company, the Trump Organization, in order to obtain loans more cheaply. Last week, the judge responsible had already determined that the ex-president was fundamentally guilty. This means that the main proceedings are likely to be essentially limited to the question of punishment – here, Trump faces, among other things, a hefty fine. He denies the allegations and has announced that he will appear at the start of the trial.
Trump is also charged in four other criminal cases – including over his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. He wants to run for president again and is clearly ahead of his Republican competitors in polls.
