Former President of the United States (US) Donald Trump said he was threatened with imprisonment of up to hundreds of years. This was conveyed by Trump after he was charged with many charges.
Reported The Hill, Thursday (3/8/2023), Trump, speaking to his supporters, said that he could face up to 561 years in prison. Trump said the US Department of Justice (DOJ) had charged him with attempting to overturn the 2020 US election results.
“With the corrupt DOJ of Crooked Joe having unlawfully ACADED on me again, reports suggest I could now face a combined 561 YEARS in prison from the Left witch hunt,” Trump said in a fundraising email to his supporters.
“Crooked Joe” is a nickname Trump for the current US president, Joe Biden.
Trump faces four charges in the investigation into the events of January 6, 2021 and other efforts to maintain power after losing to Biden in the 2020 US Presidential Election. The charges against Trump were brought by special counsel Jack Smith.
Smith previously also filed charges against Trump for his alleged mishandling of classified government documents. Trump also faces trial in New York on charges of paying hush money to porn stars ahead of the election.
Trump, in his comments, called Smith “insane” and accused him of setting up “other trumped-up charges” to “interfere with the Presidential Election”. Trump is currently campaigning for president in the 2024 election.
“Why didn’t they do this 2.5 years ago? Why did they wait so long?” Trump asked in a statement via social media Truth Social.
“Because they want to put it in the middle of my campaign,” he said.
Trump has repeatedly attacked the investigations against him as a political “witch hunt” by the US Department of Justice.
