The president of the United States, Donald Trump, maintained that the quarantine “is not necessary” in New York, New Jersey and part of Connecticut to stop the spread of the new coronavirus, after consulting with experts and after strong pushback from local political leaders and warnings of the panic it could provoke.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), however, advised residents of the region not to travel except for essential purposes.
“On the recommendation of the White House and after consulting with the governors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, I asked the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue a travel alert, which will be administered by the governors together with the Government federal”Trump wrote through his Twitter account.
Then he insisted that “Quarantine will not be necessary” and affirmed.
Such a blockade would have been the toughest measure the US government has ever taken to curb the spread of the disease.
Trump had previously indicated that he was responding to concerns in other states, particularly Florida, that travelers from the New York metropolitan area could spread COVID-19 in their communities.
The American President told reporters that “heavily infected” New Yorkers were a threat to Florida, a popular vacation destination in the south for people in the northeast.
But After strong warnings from New York Governors Andrew Cuomo, NJ, and Ned Lamont that the move would cause panic and further damage to financial markets, Trump reversed course. and said there would only be travel advisories for the region.
The head of the White House explained that he was studying the imposition of quarantine measures in New York, New Jersey and part of Connecticut to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
“We are thinking of some things. There are those who would like there to be quarantine in New York because it is a focus (…). We may not have to, but there is a possibility that today we will impose a short-term, two-week quarantine in New York“, he pointed.
New York State has reported more than 53,000 cases of the new coronavirus.
