Donald Trump Appeals Maine’s Decision to Ban Him from Primary Election Ballot

Jan 03, 2024 at 00:04

Donald Trump is appealing the state of Maine’s decision to ban him from the primary election ballot. On Thursday, Shenna Bellow, Maine’s chief minister, announced the exclusion.

Trump has asked the Maine Supreme Court to reverse Bellow’s decision. The Maine Supreme Court announced Tuesday that the request for appeal has been filed, reports Portland Press Herald.

Bellow, a member of the Democratic Party, decided to disqualify Trump from participating in the election because of his alleged role in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2001. According to a provision in the US Constitution, persons involved in an insurrection are not allowed to hold government positions .

The Republican former president has always denied involvement in the insurrection. In the complaint filed by his lawyers with the judge, Trump calls Bellows a “partisan decision maker” who does not have the authority to keep him off the ballot.

Trump said Bellows failed to establish a lawful election process, made multiple mistakes and acted in a “partisan and erratic manner.”

Bellow adds in a first response AP to have confidence in its decision and in the laws. “It is very important that first and foremost, whoever governs upholds the constitution and laws of the state.”

US Supreme Court decision expected

In Colorado, Trump has also been barred from participating in the primaries. That state’s Supreme Court made the decision there. Trump is also expected to appeal that decision. That must happen before the Supreme Court of the United States.

Many states are awaiting the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling. This will most likely be decisive for the question of whether Trump can participate in this year’s presidential elections.

In other states, politicians and judges also had to make decisions about Trump’s participation in the elections. The Michigan Supreme Court decided not to remove Trump from the ballot. A Democratic minister in California also announced that Trump will participate in the elections in that state.
