Donald Trump Appeals Decision Barring Him from 2024 Primary – Latest Updates

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday appealed a decision by Maine Secretary of State Shanna Bellows that bars him from running in the 2024 primary.

Details: Decision to ban Trump from running was taken due to his role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

The former president argues that Bellows did not have the authority to do so, that he did not incite the riot, never swore an oath to “uphold” the Constitution and was not a public servant as required by the constitutional amendment she invoked.

Trump is appealing a ruling by a Maine court against Bellows, a Democrat who became the first secretary of state in history to bar someone from running for president under the rarely used Clause 3 of the 14th Amendment, which bars those who “engaged in sedition” from holding office.

The former president is expected to soon appeal such a ban to the Colorado Supreme Court. That appeal will go to the U.S. Supreme Court, while Bellows’ lawsuit is being argued in Maine Superior Court.

Let us remind you: Formerly Colorado Republican Party appealed to the US Supreme Court asking to intervene after the Colorado Supreme Court disqualified Trump from participating in party elections (primaries) in the state.

Additionally, the Michigan Supreme Court denied claim demanding that former US President Donald Trump be banned from participating in the primaries.
