Donald Trump Accused of Deceiving Banks with Exaggerated Wealth: New York Prosecutor

09 Sep 2023 at 00:01

Donald Trump deceived banks by exaggerating his wealth by billions of dollars for years. He wanted to make better deals with those banks. This is evident from court documents, says New York prosecutor Letitia James.

James says he has “a mountain of evidence” that the former American president has misled banks with accounting tricks. Between 2011 and 2021, he is said to have exaggerated his wealth by $1.9 billion (1.8 billion euros) to $3.6 billion (3.4 billion euros).

James has asked the court in New York to hold Trump liable for this. She wants this to happen before October, because it could influence a substantive case against Trump that will be filed then. In that case, James is demanding that Trump, his two eldest sons and his company pay back $250 million to the government and that Trump be banned from ever running a business in New York state again.

A Trump spokesperson denies the new accusations: “As we will prove in court, the attorney general’s case has serious flaws and her calculations are completely incorrect.” James, meanwhile, speaks of “a conservative estimate”.

The presidential elections in the United States will be held in November next year. In the run-up to this, Trump, who has formally declared his candidacy, has to deal with numerous legal issues.
