The judge charged him on four counts:
conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to falsify the testimony of witnesses; collusion against the rights of American citizens; obstruction and attempted obstruction of proceedings.
For two of them, the politician faces up to five years in prison, for two more – up to 20 years in prison. The indictment alleges that Trump conspired with six other unnamed individuals to overturn the results of the presidential election.
Prosecutors wrote that Trump knew his allegations of electoral fraud were false but repeated them anyway to “create a tense atmosphere of distrust and anger and undermine public confidence in the organization of the election.”
According to CNN, Donald Trump has been briefed on the allegations. He is also subpoenaed in Washington, DC on Thursday, August 3rd.
Trump’s press office said the charges were an attempt to interfere in the 2024 election by the Joe Biden administration.
What has Trump been accused of?
Recall that on June 9, Trump was charged with 37 counts. They are connected with the fact that the former US president kept classified documents that he took from the White House.
Back in August last year, on his Mar-a-Lago estate, law enforcement officers discovered a number of documents marked “secret”, which he had to hand over to the National Archives.
Already on July 21, it became known that Trump’s trial would take place on May 20, 2024 – six months before the presidential election, which will be held in November.
