May 2018. Under the alias Childish Gambino, musician, screenwriter, director and comedian Donald Glover portrays vitriolic America in his music video This is America. A dark video between lascivious dance and bloodshed that evokes police violence as much as racism and the carrying of weapons in the United States. Considered by many to be a masterpiece, this piece enabled Donald Glover to win the Grammy Award the following year for “Recording of the Year, “Song of the Year”, “Best Clip video” and “Best collaboration”. Many are late discovering this artist soon to be in his forties, at ease on all fronts. Revealed to the general public in the comedy series Community in 2009, his phenomenal project on the rap scene Atlanta (2016) – where he officiates at the same time as producer, screenwriter and main actor – gives him a new status in the cinema world. Broadcast on OCS and then bought by Disney +, the program at the two Golden Globes notably brings together actors Lakeith Stanfield, Zazie Beetz and Brian Tyree Henry, filmmaker Hiro Murai and various star rappers who play their own roles like the Migos trio. 2. Swarm, a horror series inspired by fans of Beyoncé…
For this new program, Donald Glover collaborates with the African-American playwright Janine Nabers, screenwriter of the second episode of the third season ofAtlanta and member of the production of the excellent series Watchmen for HBO. Together they tell the story of Dre, played by Dominique Fishback, a young woman obsessed with a fictional pop star – heavily inspired by American star Beyoncé. At the end of the corridor, a spiral of madness and violence… This new horror series actually evokes the “beyhive nation” (Beyoncé’s hive), a reference to the community of fans of the American singer capable of being very aggressive, especially on social networks, and not hesitating to denigrate other female artists considered as adversaries or rivals such as Lady Gaga or Rihanna… In the casting, we find the British actor Damson Idris (Snowfall) and the American singer Chloe Bailey who is emancipated from the duo Chloe x Halle which she formed until then with her sister. In writing, it is a certain Malia Obama, 24, who creates the surprise… She is none other than the daughter of the former American presidential couple.
