Don Everly of the Everly Brothers, the brothers who “taught” the Beatles harmonization, has died – Corriere.it

from Matteo Cruccu

He was 84 years old and joins his brother Phil, who passed away in 1984: with a handful of hits, from “Bye Bye Love” down, they dominated in the 1950s and were fundamental for the Fab Four.

“When we started writing songs, I was Phil and John was Don”: the speaker is Paul McCartney, while John is obviously Lennon. Phil and Don, on the other hand, were the Everly Borthers and this madeleine from Macca reveals their capital importance. And in the musical formation of the Beatles and in the history of pop in general: Don Everly left today at 84, joining his brother Phil, who passed away in 2014.

And already in that circumstance the Beatle had paid tribute to the missing singer: because the Everly Brothers, with a handful of hits (Bye Bye Love, All I Have to Do is Dream e Wake Up Little Susie), dominated the scene and the ranking of America in the late 1950s. And with that skill in harmonizing the voices (Don was more baritone, Phil more tenor, but the two blended perfectly), they were decisive in forging the atmosphere of the early Beatles.

Revolutionaries in the 1950s, having suddenly become old in the following decade, the two would no longer have revived the glories of the golden season, looking for solo paths; Don also took the LSD path, making friends with Hendrix and Dylan, and decided to interrupt the history of the band in 1972 and also the personal relationships with his brother for about ten years. It would have been McCartney himself who facilitated the rapprochement between the two in 1984, writing a song for their reunion (On the Wings of a Nightinghale). Success would never return, but at least the debt to the brothers who taught them to sing would be paid off.
