SANTO DOMINGO.- A part of the Don Diego port terminal sank this Tuesday morning at a time when the ferry that connects with the island of Puerto Rico was there.
Immediately, the emergency authorities ordered an urgent evacuation of the entire area.
The Dominican Port Authority (Apordom) reported in a statement that there were no injuries and explained that the technical teams of this agency, from San Souci and the Navy, carried out the pertinent surveys to measure the material damage that said incident could cause.
The operations of the two remaining piers of that terminal remain active without eventualities and out of risk.
“We take this opportunity to thank the Specialized Port Security Corps, the National District Fire Department, the Emergency Operations Center, the Municipal Police, the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation, who are on the ground collaborating with our institution,” added.
PUBLIC WORKS CARRIES OUT AN EVALUATION
At noon, the director of Equipment and Transportation of the Ministry of Public Works, engineer Elido Alcántara, reported that this body had begun an evaluation to determine the causes of the collapse and the measures that must be adopted.
Later, through a press document, the MOPC assured that the sinkhole did not affect the structure of the floating bridge, which connects the Colonial zone of the city of Santo Domingo with Villa Duarte, in the Santo Domingo Este municipality.
. The document in this regard was signed by the MOPC Bridge Maintenance Director, engineer Romer Francisco Pérez Vargas, through the Communications and Press Department.
Public Works Brigades, in collaboration with the Emergency Operations Center, participate in the inspection of the affected area to proceed to remove the rubble.
