Union defender
Now it’s official: Dominique Heintz is leaving Union Berlin and moving to 1. FC Köln shortly before the deadline day – where the 30-year-old central defender played the most games in his professional career (108). Returnee Heintz receives a one-year contract at “Effzeh”. The veteran was also tied to the “Iron” until 2024.
Cologne’s managing director Christian Keller said: “During his career so far, Dominique has proven his Bundesliga level enough. During his time in Bochum he also showed that he can play in the center as well as on the flank. With Dominique, we gain additional squad flexibility and a lot of experience. And we are sure that he will enrich our team with his personality.”

Heintz explained: “I am very happy to return to FC. Despite my departure, the club has always been something special for me because I have very good memories of my time at FC. My family and I have always felt very comfortable here. When the opportunity arose to play for FC again, it was immediately clear to me that I wanted to do it and help the team have a successful season.”
Heintz no longer played a role in the plans for Union and was loaned to VfL Bochum last season. Also due to injury, Heintz only played twelve games there. In the Köpenickers, the left foot was not part of the squad for the first two league games of the new season and was only considered number five central defender (overview: the Union squad by position). The defender, once valued at 10 million euros, whose market value has now shrunk to 1.2 million euros, entered open doors with a change request in Berlin, it was said. The transfer fee from the Champions League participants was assessed as correspondingly low.
